Celebrating the avant-garde
Introducing Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven - a woman with the sexual aspirations of Sex and the City;s Samantha, a face like a punked-up Warhol print and vulgar vocabulary to boot.
Directed by John Warren, Christina Augello;s portrayal of Elsa is a colourful memoir of the American Dada movement, celebrating the avant-garde spirit of the early 20th century. Aided by puppets and cheap phallic gags, the undisputed "Mama of Dada" tells her story of love, art, a pained childhood, and the adult quest for sexual gratification.
Garbed in Kathryn Wood's outrageous, witty attire, Augello's performance is virtually faultless, though the comic potential is sometime lost to a divergent narrative. (Andrea Harkin)
